Is height purely genetic?
« on: March 07, 2016, 01:26:45 AM »

My dad is 170cm(5'7) tall, and my mom is 158cm(5'2) tall. I ended up being 172cm tall. When I was in middle school and high school, I usually sleep late and did not eat much. I'm wondering if it's the bad habit stopped me from growing taller or is it just genetics. I was tall when I was a kid. I was 167cm tall when I was 12 yrs old. I only grew 5cm after that. Does anyone have a similar experience as mine?It sucks to see all my friends that were shorter than me before are towering over me now...

Mine dad is 160 , mine mum is 160 as well.

I am 173, strangely mine experience parallels yours.
I was 168 by 14 but i only grew 5 cm between 14-17, and i stopped after that.
I slept late too and did not eat much, school was really stress, plus mine mum was diagnosed with cancer , some days i barely get any sleep at all and school requires me to get out of bed by 6am. So yeah, it is quite possible mine lifestyle affected mine height.

You're taller than both of your parents so malnourishment / lack of sleep had no effect on your current height. It's extremely difficult to be malnourished to the point where height was affected in a first world country. Based on your parents' height, you're very fortunate that you are 172 cm. A lot of people have their growth plates fuse early, and that may be why you did not grow that much after 12. My growth plates fused when I was only 15, just like my mom.

Thanks. I would feel much better if being short has nothing to do with my bad habits before. I have nothing to regret then. This is my destiny, and unfortunately I'm not a genetics lottery winner.

yes, but are you sur for 165 cm in North Korea or 175 in South Korea
it would be surprising that the country reveals the numbers, it would be like admitting the undernourished population

Saudi and Qatar started being rich after the 1930s when Oil was discovered for the first time. Their ancestors really struggled, they had a desert life..with difficulties to find food and water.

My mum is 163, my dad is 173 and I am 175. My sister is 163 just like my mother. I think that genetics are very highly correlated.

Many height predictors in the internet take into account your parent's height as the only factor to be considered. Genetics is very important but there are exceptions.

btw I just so today in Wikipedia that Donald Trump is 1.88 , his wife is 1.82 and their son Eric Trump is 1.96. Their daughter Ivanka is 1.80...so in this case, strong genetic correlation :)

he's rich, so his wife is a model (and many lies about model height)
but Trump is more 6' than 6'2, he seems complexed (like John Wayne) - tall guy who want to be taller

http://media.breitbart.com/media/2015/12/Trump-Cruz-Vegas-GOP-Debate-Getty-640x480.jpg 5'8 5'9 ted cruz with "6'2" trump
and not sur for his son (for me he looks 6'3 maybe 6'4) and i believe trump have another child who is not 196 cm (not sur)
dont care about what internet say
many celebrities and rich people are short

You said that you was a tall kid at age of 12 while having bad living habits at that age. So ofcourse your bad habits didnt stopped you from growing since you still grew much
