Title: How are the bones broken?
Post by: joax on January 15, 2015, 10:06:26 AM
I'm curious to know how the doctors break the bones during actual surgery.

they used to use a giggly saw. but that compromised callus formation as the heat semi killed some of the bone cells at the break and so lead to inefficient callus formation.

but now they just use basically a hammer/ chisel approach.

There are a couple devices used to cut the bone. Some doctors still use the gigli saw, as ForcedPuberty said. Though a lot of surgeons now use a device called an osteotome. Paley uses it to cut the bone, as well as my doc.
