Title: Exercises/tips to help recovery process and improve muscle strength
Post by: YellowSpike on March 05, 2015, 02:05:22 PM
I was told by my doctor that I'm only allowed to fully weight-bear around my house, as I'm still in the early stages of recovery. I just wanted to see if anyone had some tips to help move the recovery along smoothly and also to maintain/start gaining back leg muscle strength? I know walking is probably the best, but the weather is really bad where I live and I work from home until like 5:30 each day, so it's hard to make time for it right now. My left leg also has a good amount of nerve pain when doing certain movements, so that's another temporary limitation I face (though this pain seems to improve after standing/walking for a while).

Off the top of my head, I can think of leg lifts, glute bridges/squeezes and stuff, but wondering if anyone has any other tips. I'm also making sure eat a lot of calories (and a lot of eggs and cheese), and also I will start taking more supplements and having protein shakes every day.

Read up on plyometrics. There are also a few basketball books written by NBA conditioning coaches. Those are the most vigorous programme to get back your athleticism + maybe even more ;)

lol I think plyometrics is a little out of my reach right now. I was asking about basic exercises that I could do in my bed (near my computer while I work), since the weather prevents me from join going out to walk every day (though it's supposed to clear up this weekend).

You could try squatting your bodyweight while holding on to a counter or table.

Another piece of advice I'd like from LL vets - how did you go about working on your recovery once you had to return to work (even though you weren't fully recovered yet)? I work from my house's home office, but have to go back to the office within about a month or so. But even so, that's 5 days a week that I'm busy until 5:30PM. I've tried to go for walks after work, but with the weather here, it's not always possible.

I want to do whatever I can to aid in my recovery, but I need to be efficient about it.
