Title: Need help( very concerned about losing my achieved height gain)
Post by: bluebarbie on April 04, 2015, 05:47:54 AM
Hi,

I have currently gained 6cms doing femurs with LATN method. My goal is 7 -7.5cms. It was a very hard journey for me. Doing external femurs with monorails...there have been loads of pain, stress and struggling. I'll reach my goal in about next 12 days.  And after that I'll have to stay in frames for the next 1 to 2 months before I have my internal rod put in.
As there are stories like losing back ur achieved height after frame removal. I m very anxious that it would happen to me during the internal nail putting surgery.
I was thinking,  even if I wait two months after distraction phase, the bone gap wouldn't be hard enough for all those drilling and hammering, right? And it is certain that I might also lose the attained gap.
Please help me!! Is there anyone who knows anything about it or where I can get the information for it?

My surgeon told me that once the nail is locked there is no real compression, at most maybe a few mm.

Umm.. I think u misunderstood.  With my method, the surgeon needs to take off the external before the nailing is done. Then with all the drilling and hammering, there is definitely a chance to lose the gap.  :-[.

Hi Bluebarbie,

Yes, it is possible to loose part of the gap when the frame is removed. That's why your doc wants to wait some time for the mechanical tension in your leg to decrease. It's similar to what happens when people with internals have their nails changed(e.g. broken Betzbone nail). If you wait as long as your doc says the loss will be minimal or nil, at most a few mm.

Thanks mime. I'm dying to take these frames off my legs. But as u mentioned about the mechanical tension, I guess yes, I should best wait as my doctor has suggested.

Your lengthening WAY to fast I barely remember you within the last 2 months making and account and going for the surgery.  6cm in like 2months but with externals on the femur is bad 1 more cm in 12 days or 1.5 then to 7.5 is a really bad idea

I don't think I'm lenghtening too fast. It took me 3 months and 20 days to get 8cms.

Thats the timeframe for 7 cm i think. so you did 8 cm 1 month faster than usual or rather 35 days. But your a woman more elastic and higher pain tolerance etc.
