Title: Does doing stretching helps prior to the surgery?
Post by: want2btall on May 12, 2018, 02:42:20 PM
Hi for those who had done ll, do you think doing stretching exercise prior to the surgery helps?
Do you constantly do stretching exercise before your surgery?

No, they dont.
Only during LL will help.
No respectable doctor says otherwise.

I agree. I did not do much stretching before LL, and I was not that flexible either. I am at 7cm on my femurs right now with no problems. The key is lots of PT during lengthening.

Could be, but I think if you imagine those professional gymnasts that are flexible and can do splits with no problems were to do LL, I think it would be a walk in the park for them (or the closest thing one can be to that in a procedure as invasive as LL). You'd have to worry less about PT during LL maybe

Definitely. I'd recommend being flexible. Try making the palms of your hands touch the floor without bending your knees before you go to the operation room.

Lmao, I still think theyd have a waay easier time than someone that doesnt practice those excercises. Well, if you can walk, jog, and run properly pre and post LL id call the surgery a success.

No you dont.
Only quit smoking and not be obese. Nothing else would make any difference.

Nutritional status should (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nonunion#Risk_factors) be important too. You don't want weak bones that are prone to break/fracture easily and slow to grow back.

Having a healthy diet never hurts in this life. At best, it won't make a difference. And if your diet is lacking, there are supplements.

It is nearly impossible for me to make my palm touch the floor. I can barely fist my hand and touch the floor. Hows your flexibility prior and after the surgery?

I don't think everyone can touch the ground with their whole palms.

I've been doing the same stretching exercise and I can only touch the ground with my fingers. No more than that.

Unless you've been stretching for many years, it won't make a difference. Dr. Paley has said that even a flexible gymnast got too tight at 8 cm; most people are fine up to 5 cm. So a month or two of stretching in preparation for LL is not worth it, especially if it's going to cost you money.

Save that money and book extra post-op physical therapy sessions instead.

Don't get me wrong, you definitely want to be in the best shape possible prior to LL. However as Android said it would take a very long time to become noticeably more flexible, and even then there's no guarantee. Focus on strengthening your upper body so you have an easier time using a walker and transferring.
