Title: ITB Release/Internal Femur Lengthening
Post by: YellowSpike on May 07, 2014, 12:57:11 PM
Can anyone opine on how getting the ITB release when you lengthened your femurs affected your results/pain? I know for a fact that I would be getting an ITB release when doing my femurs (two doctors recommended this for me). Both doctors said to me that they expect the ITB release to only help/improve my results and that my legs ultimately wouldn't lose any strength/function upon my recovery.

Just curious in terms of anyone's personal experiences with ITB releases and femur lengthening.

my legs ultimately wouldn't lose any strength/function upon my recovery.

I think doctors who say this are foolish/pandering, my doctor included (Dr. Paley).  The release they perform on the band and then the amount of stretching that will occur will keep it from regaining its former thickness and strength.  But I do believe ITB releases are necessary, as we want to relieve the most amount of tension we can while lengthening.

IMO, I've noticed better results from patients doing the ITB release.  One of Guichet's patients couldn't lengthen past 6 cm because his muscles were too tight (which wouldn't have happened had he done an ITB release).

Yeah I was kinda skeptical about this too.

But I personally don't care that much. I'm just under 5'6" and have always gotten comments at the gym from other guys on my "soccer player legs." Mind you, I've never played soccer in my life. So I don't really care if I lose a little muscle...then maybe I can wear slim fit jeans/chinos with my new height, making me appear even taller hehe

I'm not really an athlete. I just enjoy running and working out, really. Right now, I can run 5-6 miles no problem, I have a lean muscular build, and am pretty flexible. I can stretch my fingers to touch the floor with no problem, and with some effort, have my palms touch the floor.

As long as I can eventually return to the gym and running, I'm good.

My sentiments exactly.  I enjoy running, playing sports occasionally with friends, and lifting weights, but it's not going to be a deal-breaker if I can't do these things as well as before.  I know I'll be overall much happier post-LL because I'll value myself greater.

This is quite controversial as Dr.Paley and Dr.Rozbruch are strong advocates of ITB release while Dr.Mahboubian and Dr.Lee are against it. It's interesting that Dr.Mahboubian does seem to get good results without doing the release surgery!

Yeah I'm doing it with Dr. Rozbruch, and when I got my billing, the ITB release was right there.

Granted, I'm only really shooting for 7cm (maybe 7.5 cm), but if this can help with my overall results and tension/pain, I'm down. Really don't care about losing some athletic ability, because I'm not really an athlete.

Has anyone here had the ITB release when doing internal femurs? I'm very curious to hear about how it has affected your overall results and pain. I'm hoping to get about 7cm.

I'm assuming that the ITB will at least somewhat help the pain, because I won't feel the muscle/nerve stretching tension as much while I lengthen.

Since the thread has been bumped, can anyone explain the general pros and cons of doing a release?

Also is it a patient choise? In that case I must learn all that I can.
