Title: Do you think is always bad to go for more than 6cm on tibias
Post by: Rei on May 21, 2019, 07:00:19 PM
I will do the surgery in a couple of weeks with external method.

I’m 163cm, my tibias are 32cm and my femurs are 42.
20% of 32 is slighty more than 7 which is what i wanted to get but i always read to not go over 6cm on tibias.

Do you thinks with those measurements can i get away with 7 or just be happy with 6cm?

Did you measure your tibia, or did a doctor do that? Your measurements might be wrong.
As you are already quite short, I think you should not go over 5 cm.
In LL studies I find that 16% of the bone length is the maximum recommended.

No i measured myself, i will do my first x rays the day before the surgery.

Do you have any link of those studies? In any case i will do to say the least 6cm, in the end is one year of my life, 20k euro the pain etc and 6cm is the bare minimum i will do

Yeah, that is what I was thinking myself. Also considering that you are quite short, it would make sense to do 6-8 cm.
5 cm is not worth the pain, time and money.
But better safe than sorry. 1 cm will not make you much taller, but will greatly minimize the risk for complications(which will cost you much more in the long run).
Are there any diaries here with 5 cm increase and with major complications?
With 6 cm there are.
The last thing you want in life is to pay 20k and get crippled.

This is what I could find now, but I found this percent (16%) in other places as well:

Just read the conclusions

I think so. It's what Dr Parihar suggests, anyway.

Quote
The general experience, and my own experience has been that after 5 cms, people start having trouble with more pain, difficulty to exercise their muscles, and start developing deformities such as equinus (ballerina) and flexion of the knee. Muscles can stretch to a point (like a rubber band), but beyond that point they loose their elasticity (and become like a rope). Initially muscle stretch keeps pace with the increase in length of the bone, beyond 5 cms the muscles are not stretching enough to keep pace with the bone lengthening. They then pull on whatever bone/joint they are attached to and cause deformities which are very difficult to stretch out with physio, and require surgery.

Yes.But I dunno why a bunch of people here did more than 6cm on tibia and finally had no problems.
Paley also suggests you do less than 5cm on tibia. So that's of no doubt. If your really short you should separate 8cm this target into twice surgery if you have enough money.Don't save any money just for budget.Safety first.

My tibias are 41.5cm. And the maximum I have ever thaught is 7cm which i am not sure i will hit. So u need to rethink how much you wana rip those little tibias of urs. gudluck.

p.s always remember when deciding lengthening amount, its not about the bones its about the soft tissue and nerves.
