I am planning to do this in India (either Dr. Parihar or Dr. Sharma). Is it possible to donate your own blood prior to surgery for a blood transfusion later on? I don't know where they source blood from in these hospitals in India and so want to be safe and donate my own blood.

I don't see a why not.

I don't know how it works in India and whether they store blood in the hospital itself? Or do they get it from a third party service or the government if there is an emergency need?
In India chances of getting HIV from blood transfusion is high.

Got a response that it's not logistically easy and unlikely they will do this.
There is nothing funny about HIV. It's worse than any complications of this surgery except death.

I specifically recommended a scenario for 4 inches within his 65k budget. Please no need to discreetly attack me, I did not be mean to you and am being cordial to everyone. I am honestly trying my best to help others. I have already mentioned Giotikas but that was outside his budget for both femur and tibia so I gave another option. Please man I am begging you. I have only good in my heart and do not want to be negative to anyone, I request others do the same. Appreciate it man

nooo bro I didn't mean to attack you in any way. My statement is about what I observed while using this forum, not about your comment.
Yes I agree with his budget 4 inches is gonna be hard. How is Giotikas out of his price league though? What about Guichet or Betz? Even though there are bad cases, I can't believe they are literally worse than doing this in India. He could do 3 inches (one LL) with 65k maybe.
sorry if you felt offended, wasn't my intention.

If I had the money I would have done it in the US or Giotikas but if I want to do them then I have to pay with 2-3 years of my life and my youth and I believe the chances of complications are not dependent on the country but the surgeon and your luck.

why do you have to pay with 2-3 years of time? Why would this be different in India?
Agree, it's luck and the surgeon's skills.

I have to work for 2 - 3 more years to save that much money. India is very cheap. LON/LATN is 44k with giotikas whereas it's 15-16k in India. If you want do do both segments then the price difference is huge.

I see. Yes for both segments 65k is way too little. But beware, externals on femurs are really hard.

Skillset of Indian doctors (Dr. Parihar and Dr. Sharma) is good, but there is a high chance of infections and if blood transfusion becomes necessary it can become very dangerous.
Dr. Sharma works from a reputed hospital but is less skilled. Dr. Parihar is way more skilled in India but he works from a small hospital where there is probably a high risk of infections.

Infection mostly never happens in the hospital or during surgery it happens when you are out on your own and not taking care of your externals. If you are doing internals then a very very small chance of infection if you really have bad luck. And a lot of people in India receive blood and there is no risk. All blood samples are well tested and stored. It's not 1700s or something. If you get HIV then you can sue for medical negligence and they'll have to go to jail for that.

If you are doing LON then it's the worst of both worlds. They insert a nail inside (which in India might be around 2% risk of infection compared < 1% in the west) and then the frames can create additional infection which you can prevent on your own.
If you plan to sue the hospital if you get HIV then you better have a test just before the surgery so that you can prove it happened because of the surgery. Otherwise it will be impossible to prove this.
I still think it's best to donate your own blood so that there are low risks. I have been asking around and it seems like it's not a thing in India.
-
Man do whatever but I'd highly not recommend doing external femurs.

They will test you before surgery for hiv and everything. There is no proof that infection risk is 2% in India and 1 % is west. It's complete BS.

Testing for HIV before surgery has nothing to do with getting it through blood transfusion. What is the relation? Blood is sourced from the government or other third party blood banks which is poorly regulated in India. If they do cheap testing which does not detect presence of HIV early on (some tests give correct results days after infection but some do only after weeks, so there is a window when the results are wrong), then they might have infected blood.
And general infection rate would probably be higher in India because it's more unhygienic but I don't have data to back this up.

You said you have to test before the surgery so that you can sue if you get it after that so I am saying they do it so that you can't sue. Forget about LL fix your bain first.
-
and if you are so worried then why are you even considering do it in the west.

We have self blood donation before surgery and I'm just super disappointed it doesn't exist in India.

You can go to any private blood bank and ask them to store your blood for you no one will say no to that.

Chances of the deep bone infection is more than HIV. You can ask to your doctor to give you information about the % of the deep bone infection at his practice. In Europe the risk is less than 1%, in India it might be higher but I do not know.
cheers,
sergio

This surgery is a big risk so unless your life sucks so much that you rather die the surgery is not worth it.

Dear indian,
I wish you to consider the psychological treatment if you feel such dangerous thoughts. this operation is very difficult and it will test your mental strength. I have met patients who told me they wanted to quit on the second day itself.
And I wish to apologise to you for saying anything about this operation in India. I don't know anything about the safety there and I think it would varies from one doctor to another. There would be good doctors and bad doctors everywhere. I just told to everyone to find the rate of the deep bone infection at your hospital.
Thanks,
sergio

You are misjudging me. I was saying it in a sarcastic way. I see you guys are soo worried and saying it's 1 % here 2 % there. Even if it's 1 % in one country and 2 % in another how do you know if you're gonna be in that 1% or 2% or not. It's just stupid what you guys have been thinking and commenting about. It's a risky surgery so grow a pair and do it if you really want to.
-
Are you really planning for the operation soon indian? If you are and you still have this braveness mindset then I really appreciate it and wish you the good luck for this operation and recovery. Because I was also not concerned much about the complications and always thought that I would not become unlucky, until I sent the email to reserve the operation date. When they asked to me to confirm then I asked to them for more time and have not been able to get the good sleep every night thinking about this.
-
I understand your point but If you really want to do the surgery then you have to accept the risk and if complications happen then you have to deal with them. Dr giotikas once said the complications are same as a hip replacement or joint replacement and still a lot of people get those surgeries.

You are way too worried about this thing. Every orthopedic surgery has risks of infections, expecially when metal objects are placed, but it’s a reasonable and low risk. You can think about all the people with external fixator; infections should be extremely common since screws go through the skin, but it’s not so. Most of people with osteomyelitis doesn’t even have nails in their bones but just chronic diseases, expecially in older people. You are not considering all the other risks, in my opinion way more important, such as slow/poor healing, loss of function; they are quite common facts that can decrease drastically your quality life.

This topic is useless , you don't need blood transfusion during or after surgery if your HEMOGLOBIN level is above 13.5 in males and 12.5 in female adult and healthy.
hemoglobin level can be increased a few days before surgery by giving medications which increases hemoglobin level.
-
In reality most of the healthy and adults doesn't need blood transfusion in LL surgery
