Title: Transporting large amounts of cash internationally?
Post by: shortisnotfun on September 17, 2022, 07:33:51 AM
Hello, for those who did LL abroad, how did you pay for the surgery? Were you able to transport large amounts of cash internationally? What if a corrupt airport official took it? What if something happened in your home country? How did you pay for it.

Be careful of transporting large amounts of cash. My home country of Australia you have to declare anything  over $10 000 when you land. Other countries too.

And corrupt airport staff steal things sometimes. For example, American TSA are infamous for taking items they like.

Better to pay with electronic transfers, or just withdraw money at the destination. ATM, or like you can send money to a company like western Union and withdraw in local currency at one of their branches.

I used American Express traveler's cheques.  250 of them @ $100 each.  ;D

1) Wire the money.  Ask for their international wire information and forward that to your bank.
2) Cashiers check.  If it gets lost or taken you can ask for a stop payment.
