Title: Is safe lengthening limit subjective?
Post by: dboy123 on April 29, 2023, 04:27:05 AM
So I'm 5'8 would like to do atleast 9cm on femur, is it safe to lengthen that much, I know the general guideline is 8cm to 5cm tibia, but if I'm planning just to do one sugery  to reach atleast near 6 foot, rather than do 2 surgeries to reach 6'2

Yeah it all sounds good and fun until you actually do it. You can keep going as far as your body (and nail) allows. It’s easy to say 9cm now but when you actually lengthen it ain’t gonna be so easy. Go 11cm man, or 15cm. If your body still feels good keep it going. But you’ll prob be crying to your mama at 4cm

Even if you can handle it my recommendation is to not push it. Stick to the safe zones, maybe it goes well for you but if not you will regret it all your life.
I know some people that did 7cm and more on tibias and they're fked. Every one of them, even after 1 year.

The bone itself can handle 9 cm on femur, but you have to remember that it is not just the bone being lengthened. It is also your soft tissue in the sense of muscles, nerves, tibia/femur ratio, IT-band etc.

The more you lengthen the more you strain your biomechanics. You risk having a harder time walking normally again afterwards the more you lengthen. So at a certain point it might be wise to ask yourself if it smarter to aim for being 5’10” and having a higher recovery chance rather than being 5’11.5” and having a lower recovery chance.

If you lengthen both tibia and femur, then biomechanica can stay same. Same bone ratio. And stuck to femur and tibia safe limits. Then should be OK yea?

I would say you have a much higher chance of good recovery yes. But it will cost more to do both femur and tibia, and you have to be more patient as it takes longer time etc.
