Why not go for 7.5/8cm? Might as well get the extra length since you’re going to the best doctor in the world and spending 100k+
-
Hello Activatedx,
I only do 6.5cm this time because it will recover faster and will have minimum impact on my body.I plan to do my Tibias after two years around 5cm.So that I can have a good proportion.

Hey I'll send you a PM.

Today I got surprised when I sent a mail to Dr. Paley saying that I am excited, however, I am also a bit nervous. An hour after he replied, "Don’t worry. All will be OK."
This made me rest assured that I am in good hand.
-
Hi, I also located in shang hai and want to do this surgey, but I am 30 years old. I need more information. So can you send me info or wechat account? Thx. May be I will do this surgey 2 years later....
-

Seconded.
Or at least don't rule it out from the beginning! If you feel fine after 6.5 cm I absolutely don't see a reason to not push for the extra cm. The extra time it takes to recover from that extra cm is negligible compared to the total time it will take to recover from the first 6.5 cm. I also don't believe there's any academic literature showing a (long term) correlation between 6.5 cm vs 7.5 cm and athletic ability, post-lengthening. Lengthening tibias 2 years later is far more likely to limit one's athletic ability than going for the extra 1 cm in femurs in round 1.
Just my 2 cents, of course. I just would keep an open mind about it before you start the lengthening process.
-
Today I went to the hospital for the pre-surgery admission testing and pre-operation clearance with Dr. Paley. I was told by the nurse that I cannot eat after 12 am and stop drinking 2 hours before the scheduled surgery time. Once again, Dr. Paley mentioned that everything is going to be fine and there is nothing to worry about.
My surgery is scheduled at 8am tomorrow morning and I have to arrive there 2 hours before.
I know everything will be fine but I am still a bit nervous, hope everything will go well.
-
Hi just do it
I did that in the same place. You should be fine. Don't worry and be relaxed.
Good luck!
-
Good luck my friend
-
@verticalpush Thank for your valuable advice. I'll see how it goes and decide whether or not to go an extra mile.
@grow for tall I will keep you updated to the newest experience during this process.
-
Surgery isn’t a hard process, I had my appendix removed as a kid once they give you aenesthia you black out and wake up and feel zero pain. Even when you wake up you won’t feel pain because you’ll still feel effects of aenesthia . You’ll be fine kiddo and God bless
Thousands of dwarfs or people with unequal leg length go through this surgery every year, you’ll be ok my friend just pray
-
Rooting for you! You are with the most reputable/experienced doctor in the world.....you're in good hands!

Before Surgery:
Now it’s 6:00am in Paley Institute.we are already in the hospital waiting for the surgery. This is going to be a big day!
-
Good luck ... my friend
-
I hope all went well! Sending best wishes
-
I saw my parents at around 2pm. Dr. Paley came to say Everything goes well to my parents. I am tired today....will keep you updated tomorrow.

Day 2 of surgery
Pain
Today is a very tough day, everything start to hurt. I have to overcome the painfulness by eating medicine.
Appetite
My appetite is not great today, the only way to have energy is by hanging brine.
Walk
The PT came today and taught me how to get out of bed and get into the wheel chair. It is not easy job.
Hopefully, I will be discharged tomorrow.
-
Best wishes Just do it. Stay strong buddy.

First few days are hardest, after that smooth sailing if you do PT and follow routine, God bless

Surgery day3:
Unfortunately I can’t be discharge today since my oxygen level is way too low which means I need oxygen mask to breath in air. However, I am starting to feel better today, I should be able to be discharged by this weekend.
Exercise:
The PT came today and started to simple exercise with my leg, by pulling my leg up and down.

Did they tell you why your oxygen level is so low? That doesn’t seem typical from what I’ve read.
-
@jaybam I have just asked the nurse, she said that they are afraid that I will have blood clot since after the surgery the blood moves very slowly as I don’t move very often. I also ate aspirin to prevent this from happening.
-
Stay strong man. Everyday will get better!
If you could describe your pain experience so far out of 10, what would you say its been at on average?
Best wishes!
-
Surgery Day4:
Sorry for not posting yesterday since I’m feeling unwell.
Lack of oxygen:
I got discharged today. Everything is going smoothly, however, during the night I got low oxygen again, which makes me really sick.
Toilet:
I tried to go to the toilet with my walker, it doesn’t work and I almost fainted.
Itchy:
I got itchy near my wound, which means my wound is getting better.
Pain:
Normally, my pain level is at around 3-4, I overcome the pain by eating oxycodone. It normally gets better around 10-20 minutes.
-
Nice to hear things are going smoothly for you as these days are usually quite bad. You’re only experiencing 4/10 pain. Well I shouldn’t say only but yeah so far so good!
Best wishes !
-
Surgery Day 5+6:
Toilet:
I can finally go to the toilet by myself with the walker with great success.
Pain:
My pain level started to rise, especially near my wound. Which means that I have to eat Oxycondone or acetaminophen depending on the level of pain 4 hours after each medication.(Acetaminophen is from the pain level of 1-3 and Oxycodone is from pain level of 4-10)
Physical Therapy.
Tomorrow,(Monday24) I am going to have my first physical therapy session. Hopefully, it wont hurt a lot.
Appetite:
My appetite is not really good these days, since I can’t really move on my bed, whenever I start to move, my leg start to hurt. I think it is because I didn’t move a lot so I can’t eat much.
I will try to update my diary everyday, but I am really tired these days due to the rising level of pain on my legs.
-
Just take it easy. Focus all your energy on your legs. Update whenever is convenient for you.
All the best!

Physical Therapy
Yesterday, I started my physical therapy. I did about 6 exercises. I found that the Thomas Stretch helped me a lot. It is a process by which I have to lie both legs bent over the edge of firm surfaces, bring the opposite knee to chest. Apply downward pressure to the leg. It really hurt, but I know it is good for me since it relaxes my muscle a lot and I feel less pain afterwards.
Removing bandages
Today, the doctor checked my wound, luckily, everything is good. I can remove my bandages.
Limb Lengthening
I started my process of leg lengthening today, 0.25mm each time, 4 times a day. This is not a hard or painful process. I used a magnetic machine pressed on my leg for about 2 minutes on both legs.
Pain
My leg starts to feel much better, which means I would be able to sleep better without have much pain medicine.
Within the one week of my surgery, I found that this is not an easy journey, first few days are the worst. After that, if you follow the therapist, it will go smoothly. Not given up is the key aspect of this whole journey.
Please feel free to ask me any question regarding my limb lengthening journey or anything that I have written in this forum.
I want to attach a photo of my stitches on one of my leg, but it didn’t work. Can someone tell me how to upload the photos? Thanks in advance.
-
Today has been a very good day. I haven’t ate any pain medicine for the whole day and I can walk a long way without needing a wheel chair!

As a STRYDE patient thank you for posting a video. Unfortunately, when you click the play button the video says unavailable. You posted the video correctly on the forum, it's a problem with the video on youtube. You can re upload the video & check to make sure the settings are correct on youtube. That should solve the problem.

Looking good!
How do you feel so far about the process? Any regrets so far etc
All the best!
-
Everything is good so far. The only thing that annoys me is my right leg, which always wake me up at night. This might be because my muscle on my right leg is very tight.Hopefully, it will get better as time flies.
This is a tiring experience, but if you do your normal exercise given by your PT, all will go smoothly.
-
Thanks for sharing the video and best of luck on your journey! Progress looks great. I will be doing my femurs/Stryde in August and will be staying at the Homewood Suites at WPB. I'll send you a PM! Would definitely like to connect for support.
-
Great video... keep up the walking and take it... nice and slow
-
Great Job, buddy.
No rush to walk right now, I promise you that. Just keep doing exactly what you're doing there. One piece of advice... You look good so far and keep your torso straight up and down...no hunching over while on the walker. Since we are "leaning" on the walker so to speak our body has a tendency to want to bend at the waist and quadriceps area. Stay up and down and no bending over if you can avoid it. This will help maintain your hip flexor mobility and assist in the prevention of anterior pelvic tilt.
I am especially rooting for you just do it! Let me know if you need anything.

Two weeks have passed and everything has been great. Big challenge ahead tomorrow. I have to get on a taxi to the physical therapy appointment by myself without the wheelchair, since there are no shuttle service on weekends.
I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone's support and encouragement during the last two weeks.

Why do you want or need to do PT during weekend? I was there but never really did PT during weekend. Plus, are you alone? No parents or family?

Yesterday, I went to have my post-operation appointment with Dr. Robbins. Everything is successful so far. However, my right leg is 3mm longer than my left leg. The doctor said this was not a big problem. I have to spend 3 more days after my whole lengthening process to fix this problem. Another news is that I can finally go swimming now. This definitely makes me feel better. The only way to sleep better now is to stretch more.
This is definitely not easy, but I'm glad that all is going well so far. I hope that this will continue through the whole process.
-
If you ever have any questions feel free to PM me, i did 8cm in femurs september 2018, going for 8cm in Tibias september 2019
-
@Ghostfish: I have PT on Saturday because July 4th is a holiday so they changed the PT session to Saturday instead. My parents are with me for the whole process and I found that going on to a taxi without the wheelchair is not a problem.

Hi, Just do it.
Have you had any problems with taking a taxi without a wheelchair to go to PT?
Did you walk a short distance with crutches?

Hi, just do it,
I am also from China. I know of a Chinese guy who's had the CLL surgery from Paley last December. And me is from Betz last December. We've met this April and we both have a good recovery. He told me he had experienced a hard time during lengthening. And he had to spend some extra money to buy pain killers. But anyway, after that hard time, everything went well again for him. Now we both can walk normally 7 months after surgery. He even showed a recent video that he could do some jumping and exercising.
Good luck to you. You will also make it.
-
Time flies, it has been one month after my surgery. Everything is going smoothly so far and I am sleeping much better than 2 weeks ago. The only problem right now is my muscle being very weak and abnormal gait, by walking like a shrimp.
I am off pain medicine for about 2 weeks already. The only medicine that I am having right now is Acetaminophen PM which helps me to sleep for the whole night. Vitamin D and Calcium to help me to get a healthy bone.
Yesterday, it’s my first time since my surgery to go out for dinner and go to the market to buy food. Walking a long distance makes my muscle very soar.
First two weeks is the toughest, after that everything feels better if you work hard with your stretches. People always tells me no pain, no gain.
-
@My Evolution @Wangchaoan Thank you so much for your support and encouragement, it really helps me to keep going.
-
Today, I went to my second doctor appointment. The doctor said that everything is fine, but I still have the same old problem of right leg being 3mm longer than my left leg. This is probably because I didn’t separate my leg when doing the lengthening, this would cause the magnet to contact the other rod, so my right leg grows faster. Right now, I have grown 2.8cm on my right leg and 2.5cm on my left.
I did three stretches now. One being done in the hospital and two being done at home. Doing PT is not easy and fun, you need to have the courage to overcome the pain.
I went to swim today and I found that I can’t move my leg much, I can only float in the water. Hopefully, this will change as my leg becomes looser.
There is no more pain from surgery and my wound is healing really good. The only difficulties right now is at night, my leg becomes really tight and sore which always wakes me up, if I don’t eat the Acetaminophen PM.
-
Hi how are you feeling now? Everything go smoothly? I have wanted this procedure for 20 years, I first heard of it as a child, I’m now 34 I’m a woman who is 5’2 and a half, and would like to gain 3 inches. Would you recommend this procedure? I’m looking at Dr M, Paley and they even do it in Istanbul Turkey. I’m from the UK and recently they have bought the Paley technique to London, Dr Ian Bacarese-Hamilton does it in London in assassination to the alley method, I’m saving for this as so much money, of course it’ll be easier for me to go to London as I am not far from London. But considering US Dr M and looking at doctors with a lot of experience
-
I met Just Do It today. We all went to PT together.
The courage it takes for younger patients is astonishing. This journey is not to be taken lightly.
-
I am doing amazingly well so far.I am surprised that I can sleep 9 hours at night without waking up. I have officially grown about 3.5 cm now. The only problem right now is that I have lost 9kg since the surgery. I think it is because the surgery did some harm to my appetite. Hopefully, I would be able to gain some weight as I get better.
Right now, I am trying to use cane instead of crouches. I found that crouches can support a lot of weight, however, canes cannot, you have to put most of your weight on you leg. When I am walking, my body will shake left and right. I think it is because my IT band is very tight. I hope that this will improve as I do more stretch.

Did you get surgery using the stride nail or precise?
-
I am also your age (maybe a bit older, in 2 months I'll be 18). Unfortunately I won't do the surgery until I am 21 (when I finish my Bachelors degree) but you are such an inspiration to me. I was so terrified by everything I heard but now seeing the progress you have done in such a short time... It's just amazing.
You give me motivation to wait and eventually (in 3 years) do this surgery, so I'll feel more in alignment with myself.
Keep updating us with your amazing journey.
Much appreciation, and I wish you a quick recovery.

Today, I met Dr. Robbins. Everything is good so far, according to the ex-ray I have grown 4.4cm on my right leg and 4.2 on my left leg, which means that I am half way done. The medicine which Dr Robbins recommended to me is Ibuprofen, which is for pain management, this is just for when I get really painful since I am getting tighter.
Right now my goal is higher, hopefully I can make it 8cm instead of 6.5cm. This is because I have seen lots of successful journey so far.
This journey is certainly not getting easier, since my hamstring is getting tighter, if it gets too tight, I have to slow down my lengthening to 3 turns a day, this means I will grow 0.75mm a day.Luckily, Dr Robbins still allow me to do 4 turns a day.

@ MirinHeight I am using the stryde nail, since it can support my whole weight.
@ Dreamingtobetaller Everything is going smoothly. I don’t think that 5’2 and a half feet is a problem with girls, but if you think it’s short, then I have no comments.I think this is a really worthwhile surgery, since the tallness will be with you forever. There is no problem with the stryde nail, you will be in good hand if you have the surgery with Dr Paley. He is the most experienced doctor in the world.

Dear all,
Long time no update, so, I will write about my two month limb lengthening experience.
I can’t believe how fast time flies. Last Sunday,August 18 is two month since my limb lengthening surgery. Until today, I have grown about 5.8 cm on my right and 5.3cm on my left leg.Which means that I still have 1.2 cm of lengthening on my right and 1.7 on my left leg to achieve 7cm. I have decreased my goal because I will do my tibias in the next two years, to allow a good proportion.
Right now, both my legs are getting tight. I have to eat ibuprofen every night in order to sleep well.My appetite is getting better day by day as I get more comfortable, but my weight still haven’t gained much, I think this is because a lot of my energy is used to recovery of my legs.
I did two aquatics therapy during my lengthening process with Katie Crane. I would recommend her, since she is really professional which can be seen on her smile and her energy level. She chooses different stretches for me according to my situation. With the help of Katie, I am now not afraid to move my legs in water and swim for a few laps.
One great news is that I don’t need to use walker and crouches to walk, I am only assisted by the cane. Most of the time when I am in the hotel I can walk with no assistance.
Overall, it is a worthwhile surgery and I really appreciate the help from Dr Paley and his fantastic team for making my journey a very successful one. Two more weeks, I will finish my lengthening process and I’ll go back to my normal life in about three weeks from now.
-
Amazing update... great to see you ..reaching your goal ..
-
Congrats young man! All the best you're doing great
-
Good job buddy!
I wasn't comfortable on the cane until about week 15 'ish. I'm a late bloomer I guess. haha. You're doing wonderfully! Keep it up.
-
I am doing great right now. Right now, I am 6.5 right and 6.1 on my left. This is measurement base on math. This leaves me about 5 more days before I finish my right leg and 9 more days for my left. Anyway, I am almost done!
As you would have imagined, both of my leg are getting tighter day by day as I get taller. At night, I need to eat two ibuprofen in order to sleep better without waking up. I have no problem of sleeping two hours after lunch, this allows me to recover faster.
As summer are ending, most of my lengthening friends left in this two weeks. All of them are doing wonderfully well. I found that most of the patients have leg length discrepancy , this is normal since two legs have different tightness, so the speed of lengthening is different for both of the leg. It has been a great summer, I have made a lot of new friends both in the hotel and in Paley’s Institute.Hopefully, these can be my life long friends.
I really hope that I can recover faster, so that I can return to my normal life as soon as possible.

I have almost finished my limb lengthening process. Right now, I have slowed down my right leg to 2 turns each day, and 4 turns for my left leg, this is to make sure that both of my leg are at the same length before I go back next Thursday.
The only thing I am worried about is that I might have 1 cm difference between my left and right leg. Hopefully, both of my leg will be at the same length.
1-5cm is the easiest in all of my 3 month journey. From 5cm onward,it gets much harder as my leg gets tighter.PT is the most important part in this process. After PT, my leg gets much more flexible. Two years later I will do my tibia, hopefully, it will be as successful as this journey.
-
Great news! The X-Ray says I am 7.5cm taller, but actually the doctors say that I am 7.1-7.2cm taller than before, which means I have ended my femur limb lengthening journey. Dr Robin said that I have to continue to eat Vitamin D and Calcium for two more month and continue to do PT until I can walk normally again.
Here I want to say a huge thank you to everyone in this forum for the continuous support throughout the whole journey. Especially to my Mum and Dad for supporting me and accompany me for this three month. I also want to show my gratitude to Dr Paley and his team, they made my life much happier.
Thank you and see you in two years time for my Tibias journey.
-
Congratulations.. just do it ... I'm so glad everything went ok ..
Dr Paley... is definitely a great doctor... you were always In safe hands ..
Please keep us all updated.. panda 8)

Great job just do it. You are lucky to have done this at your age and to have parents who supported you.
Show us how you walk and run in the next few months if possible :)
Have a safe flight.
-
JDI, why you changed your initial goal?
-
@wannagrowtaller I changed my goal because I will do my tibias in two years time. This would allow me to have a good proportion.
-
Well, if you will do tibias too, I think 6cm in femur and 5cm in tibia would keep your proportion close to 80% femur/tibia ratio and it would not be too hard on your soft tissues.
But that's your choice and I respect that.

Here is my walking video which I took today.
-
Nice job, "Just Do It". You did it and you look ALOT taller. Wow; what a difference. For those new to the forum and to CLL; what you are seeing is a young man who just completed his lengthening phase so there is some stiffness; but your knee extension is very good, appears that you do not have anterior pelvic tilt and flexion is okay. In 1 month time your walk will really start to look normal...and in 2 more months around month 5; you'll REALLY be looking good. Great job buddy!
-
Proportions honestly look great. The extra length accentuates your slenderness, but your torso and head still seem much longer than your legs, which is an absolute win. Filling out your frame with a little bit of muscle would further improve your proportions. Great job and keep pushing your walk to further normalcy.
-
Congrats just do it! Proportions and walk look great. Happy to see the hard work pay off and excited to see you enjoy your new height. Please keep us posted on your progress through the consolidation stage, and most of all, the benefits of your new height!

I just want to say a final thank you for everyone’s support and encouragement, it really helps me to get going. I am now on the way back to Hong Kong, hopefully I would be able to cope with this 16 hours of long flight.
By the way, I feel great to be able to touch the airplane’s seat ceiling.

Update:
It's been a flying 4 months since my surgery. It's been a really quick recovery, I am now very busy studying in the school.
Right now, I have no pain at all, which means I am not having any pain medicine, however, I am still having 2 Calcium and 2 Vitamin D, to continue eating for at least 3 more months. My walking is getting much better without using the crane, but I am still swaying a bit and I still cannot climb the stairs without holding on to the railings, that might be because my bone hasn't recovered yet. I cannot do any sport which involves running for another 4-5 months until my bone fully recovered. The thing that surprised me is that I cannot feel any rods in my leg. My weight hasn't increased, I am still very skinny, weighing 45 kg, have 9kg to reach my normal weight, but my appetite is getting much better compared to my time in the US.
I am continuing to do my normal exercise routine at home, 2 times a day and 2 PT sessions a week at the PT office. I hope that my walking will improve in the next two months and that I can return to sport by April next year.

All the best!

I'll be honest, you're head is the perfect size to get an extra 5cm tibia lengthening. It's a little on the larger side at your current height- It'll look perfect after your second surgery. You definitely look good right now. God it must feel amazing going from 158cm to almost 165cm. Definitely life changing. Happy for you fellow Chinese LLer. Add oil!

Hi Just Do It,
It’s been a while - I hope you are doing well.
May we get a video of your progress so we can see for ourselves how your walk etc is please.
This is the biggest decision most of us will be making in our life and a video will go an extremely long way! Thanks for the ones you’ve already posted, they really help. I defo am not able to tell who you are from your videos.. it’s like turning your back to the camera sorts out a lot of privacy concerns hmm.
Thanks!
