what is externals on tibia only?

I have seen this mentioned while digging in the archives and would like to know more about it. Some of the pro's and con's. I'm leaning personally towards tibia's because it is the most time tested form of lengthening out there.

I know lengthening femurs have the shortest recovery time but what about externals only, how long does it take to walk again for 6.5 cm or a bit less the max. Are externals only with a reputable MD the safest bet? As Femurs have the potential for arthritis in the knee joint.
