When did you stop growing?
« on: February 25, 2018, 05:14:10 PM »

Do you guys think part of the reason you are short is because you started puberty early? What I have noticed is that short people usually stop growing earlier, so unless they used an Ai (like arimidex) their growth plates fuse by 16 even though males usually grow up until 18-21

I grew slowly through childhood and was 4'9 when I was 13. Had a growth spurt that brought me to about 5'5 in two years and stopped growing at 15 when my plates fused. It was the same age my mom stopped growing. Funnily enough, I was the largest baby in the hospital when born at 9 lbs 4 oz. Probably the only time I was ever the biggest in a room lol

Yeah, I started puberty really early and stopped growing at 16.

I've also heard very high levels of testosterone can also affect your growth. Haven't double-checked, though, so take this with a grain of salt.

I did always have the impression that people with later puberty tend to grow up taller. That might be true.

One of the few exceptions I've noticed were in people of East African ancestry. They still seem to grow tall even when they start puberty early.

Saw this thread on /r/tall a few weeks ago, it's all over the map. Some early, some late.

All the tall people in r/tall say they have personal problems with being tall but I call bullsh*t, nothing is worse than being discriminated by society. Fu*k all of those "No space for my legs in cars/airplanes"

Many there are actually really tall (190cm+). They have legitimate problems.

However, it's like the difference between the small and big... male genitalia... communities. One community's problems aren't... as big as those of the other one. They also both have communities on reddit.

Didn't mean to derail this, wasn't expecting rage. I was curious about how many growth spurts there were and came across it via Google, not specifically searching within /r/tall (I don't even lurk there, for obvious reasons).

Sorry about that!

I apologize if I have offended anyone, you are right @myloginacct I didn't see the perspective of those that are above 190+ cm. I think it's disingenuous of them to downplay the benefits of being tall while saying they have less room/space for their legs etc.

What do we consider early puberty, before 12?
I also thonk facial/body hair might indicate how much growth a person has left. Though some people did say that facial hair is not correlated to height growth

Well, you made me google it, and I found these:

https://kidshealth.org/en/parents/precocious.html
https://www.nationwidechildrens.org/early-puberty-in-boys

First link mentions:
Quote
Precocious puberty — the onset of signs of puberty before age 7 or 8 in girls and age 9 in boys — can be physically and emotionally difficult for kids and is sometimes the sign of a health problem.

Second link mentions:
Quote
Puberty is the time when boys’ bodies and minds mature and they grow into young men. This usually starts when a boy is about 12 years old. Sometimes, though, a much younger boy starts to show the signs of puberty. This is called precocious (pre-KOH-shuss), or early puberty (PU-ber-ty).

Of note, this was mentioned in the first link:
Quote
When puberty ends, growth in height stops. Because their skeletons mature and bone growth stops at an earlier age than normal, kids with precocious puberty usually don't reach their full adult height potential. Their early growth spurt may make them initially tall when compared with their peers, but they may stop growing too soon and end up at a shorter height than they would have otherwise.

That's very interesting. I have heard that when people get facial and chest hair they are at tanner stage 4.8+ and have either stopped growing or will not grow for much longer. I would say that your experience is rare (though many wish it wasn't).

^ No one knows for certain, there seem to be a lot of factors to growth that doctors still don't understand.

It's not uncommon for gymnast girls, even ones who get their periods at a regular age, to grow an inch or two into adulthood, I've seen it personally happen myself.

Also, males frequently think they stopped growing at 14 because that's when they received their last 4+ inch growth spurt, but it's just not true. You only feel like you stop growing because it's the last very noticeable growth, but I would estimate that on average they still grow another 2 or 3 inches until they reach adulthood.
