how long would 3-3.5 cm external tibias w/tsf frame take?
« on: March 25, 2018, 03:20:38 AM »

I'm assuming 4.5-6 months for 3 cm
and 5-7 months for 3.5 cm

would these be good estimates or would early weight bearing with the TSF device speed up recovery.
I ask because I haven't seen diaries with pts that used tsf frame (best external device; fast full weight bearing) with a respectable surgeon on this forum.

Thank you

It's probably best you send these questions to the doctors themselves. A lot do reply by e-mail.

While TSF and other hexapods are great for correcting complex deformities, it doesn't speed up the lengthening process. Where it shines is its precision and accuracy, which isn't as crucial for CLL patients.

I wouldn't say that hexapods lead to significantly faster weight-bearing, at least compared to an Ilizarov frame. The rings and wires are what sets it apart from the likes of unilateral fixators (aka monorails), not much the struts of a hexapod.

If you have the choice, hexapods are indeed better. But don't bet on it for speed; just look for diaries with Ilizarov frames since the difference will be negligible. It's not a night and day difference like LON/LATN, which are methods precisely conceived to speed up LL. In addition to those, a healthy diet and supplements conducive to bone growth will have more of an impact for recovery time.

For 3cm you'll need 4-4.5 months from surgery till fixator removal.
For 0.5cm more add about another 20 days.

thanks man, that is reassuring.
i have seen a lot of diaries that took ~2 months/cm

but maybe mine would be quicker due to small lengthening and early weight bearing.
thanks for the input
