Going through a rough time, need some help
« on: May 31, 2020, 12:45:08 PM »

Hello LL community,

Thank you for reading this post. As the title suggests, I am not in a very good state. My goal was 8cm with my femurs and I am now worried I may have to call the whole thing off. I'd great appreciate any advice you LL veterans out there could provide.

A bit about me:

I was set to have my surgery in late March in New York City, everything seemed great. I had organized everything (time off from one of my jobs, the slow season for my other job, moving to a more appropriate apartment in February to prepare for recovery, dealing with insurance, buying the necessary auxiliary products such as a laptop stand, etc) A lot of planning was done. Then, as we all know, the worldwide pandemic hit, and two weeks before my surgery was scheduled, it was postponed indefinitely. I was stunned and broken. I just felt like a zombie for days on end. I was hoping it would be changed soon but months passed and by now I should have been about 2/3 of the way through the distraction phase. What a dream that would have been.

Last week, I finally received an email that my surgery was ready to be rescheduled. But at some point 2 months ago, in preparation for my surgery I ripped my hamstring stretching. I am normally a hyper-flexible guy. I can stretch and touch not only my fingers, but I could even reach my wrists all the way to the floor while standing straight, but I wanted to take it even further, and I pushed it too far. I thought nothing of the hamstring pain at first, I thought it would go away long before my surgery would be rescheduled. But here I am 2 months later and I am unable to stretch my right hamstring without pain. I feel like I've tried everything, but the tear must have been worse than I thought. I will call a hamstring specialist tomorrow but I feel there's not much he could really do.

If I could safely reschedule my surgery for 3 weeks from now I would be relieved, but I fear the idea of having to postpone my surgery again indefinitely because of a stupid mistake I made would be too overwhelming for me. Yesterday I actually sobbed at the thought of that. I really feel the need to get it done now for 2 reasons: 1) Now would be the safest time to get it while the pandemic has weakened before it's predicted to come back in a resurgence in September and last throughout the winter ; 2) My insurance will eventually expire in early 2021 which would make the whole process too expensive.

I just feel beaten once again, and am looking for some information on how to go forward. The daredevil in me wants to do everything I can to get my right hamstring in the best position possible and do the surgery 3 weeks from now, but I shudder at the thought of that causing intolerable pain and limiting my ability to reach 8cm. If I had to stop the distraction phase early because of that, I think I might resent myself for the rest of my life. Do any of you LL veterans out there think a goal of 8cm would be possible going into this with a hamstring injury? I know it's a tough question, but any ideas would help.

No idea about internal femurs/hamstring, but you mentioned a hamstring specialist.  Wait until you've talked to him before you get discouraged or worry.  The ball isn't in your court right now.

Damn you've been unlucky! The quarantine period was perfect to heal staying at home without worries about the world outside.
Anyway I think that the most important stretching is just during the distraction phase and after it. Don't be obsessed by it, the flexibility of your tissues is mostly due to intrinsic properties of them.
I hope you can do it as soon as possible!
