Dr.Nima Heidari (London UK) Chinese translation provided
« on: December 01, 2017, 03:40:33 PM »

Just want to share information about a really professional and experienced Doctor I knew in London.

And here follow some questions I've asked him about limb lengthening. You can also find his video explaining about limb lengthening during an interview on Youtube.

What method is used for stature lengthening?

Dr Heidari uses the most cutting-edge technology available in the world today. A special internal intramedullary rod is used. This involves inserting a telescopic intramedullary nail (tube-like device into the marrow cavity of the bone) using minimally invasive techniques. The bone is then surgically divided through a 1 cm incision on the skin. The best device available today is the PRECICE from Ellipse Technologies. The Precice has excellent rate control and far less pain associated with the lengthening process when compared to the traditional external fixators techniques. The Precice is the only device on the market that has a reverse mechanism. The ability to go reverse is a very important safety feature.

How much height can I gain with the Precice?

The maximum achievable total height gain with two lengthenings is up to 14.5cm. This consists of 8cms in the femurs and 6.5cms in the tibias. This is best done as two separate procedures performed 1 year apart.

It is essential to note that lengthening must be tailored to the tolerance of the patient’s bone and soft tissues. The risk of complications from lengthening increase with increased length. Up to 5cm is low-risk lengthening. Between 5-8cms is medium risk and over 8cms is high risk.

What is the process from consultation to surgery? And rough cost?

Consultation-(Prehab)- Surgery-Rehab

The total cost depends on the increase you would like to have and time the treatment takes. For example, for 7cm increase, the total cost range is from £60,000 to £90,000, including all the medical expenses. And the treatment will take minimum 4-5month. As for international patients, Dr Heidari can contact the best rehab center in your own country or city and let you finish the rehab there if you would like to come back home earlier.

The Precice system is not the only device that has the reverse mechanism.
Also classical Ilizarov frames and Taylor Spatial Frame have that feature.
