what did you try to do when visiting a new country the first time?

for me, I tried to learn common words like, hi, thank you.

it is important to know a few words so I can make new friends there.

I remember the first time visiting Japan, I was practising some simple words like thank you in Japanese. I used it very often, very helpful when I needed help on finding my hotels.
