Equivalents of LL pain
« on: May 16, 2024, 08:53:18 AM »

For those who have done limb lengthening and experienced similar pain before. What is the thing you can compare it to?
I need some equivalents of limb lengthening pain (ie what pain is most similar to).

yeah that's the end goal, however ideally you'd want to prepare yourself mentally.

It was the worst pain I’ve ever experienced however the breakout episodes rarely exceeded 30 minutes.

If you had read my VERY detailed diary, you could already know the answer...
But I repeat here for you:
There are TWO MAIN DIFFERENT kind of pain.

First one is like any poli-traumatism. That means broken bones, cut muscle, holes and nails in bones, screws, etc

Second one is elongation pain, which is unique, non imagined by nature, because is artificial and forced...  That happen because EVERYTHING is stretched in very short time... like muscles, tendons, vessels, fascias and ESPECIALLY nerves !
It is very hard to explain how is it, because, as I said, there is no compare.
Its a permanent and weird pain. If you stretch your legs and after 5 minutes try to flex it, you have a big pain and you have to do it very slow.
If your legs been flexed for a while and want to stretch them... you have again a big pain and you have to do it very slow.
This pain usually comes after 5 cm on femur and 3 cm on tibias, depending by previous elasticity you had...

Ofcourse, there is a third pain, the infection’s pain… but usually happen external, to LON and Ilizarov… and extremely rare inside-the-bone infection

Also, if the air or water is cold... you can feel instantly a sciatic nerve pain, which is really bad.

You're welcome !

After dozens of diaries I've read almost all patients complained that femur pain is so excruciating that it's not even comparable to tibia pain. It's scary to be honest.

I wonder what distraction feels like. I can imagine it but the actual experience would be very interesting to be honest. Also, I think that distraction on femurs has to be more painful due to large muscles surrounding the bone.

I'm not afraid of pain, what I'm afraid the most is bone infection. Other inconveniences can be dealt with much effort and discipline but bone infection is the scariest thing of LL there is.

Also, I'm kinda afraid of internal nailing. I know that doing femurs with pure external is a suicide so it's either LON or fully internal nails for femurs. Either way it involves nailing while you can avoid nails when doing tibia with Ilizarov or TSF.

My experience for internal nails for both Femur and Tibias are not too bad.
It can be managed by the right dose painkillers.

Tibias is more complicated cos it is lower legs and blood circulation is not as good as Femur.
More swelling, stiffness and soreness at the ankles, tibias bones and calf...sometimes kneecap.

Some answers were stupid. I know what you are struggling about. I had the same question before and unfortunately I didn’t get any good respond. So here is my experiences

I did LON tibia and I tell you there is so many level of pain.
Surgery pain: surgery pain wasn’t crazy I did other surgeries before that was even more painful so don’t worry about that.

Discomfort of the external factor: this feels like if you wear a shoe that 2 or 3 size smaller than your normal size 24/7 for 70-90 days would you be able to handle this type of discomfort? This is how it feels.

Type of pain: it’s all depends on you everyone is different but I’ll just share my experiencez
After effect surgery pain: your legs will be swollen and this will be painful and your feet will be stiff so this type of pain is not fun.
Lengethibg pain: you will feel bone pain, never pain, muscle pain, strings pain every day there is a new type of pain you wil feel. Bare in mind you will need to walk if you do LON so the walk at the begging will be okay but after you reach 4cm or so you will find walking so much difficult because of the muscle and nerve stretching.

You won’t sleep during all that period even with strong pain killer you will be having small naps but no sleep.

If you want to reduce the pain to 70% I highly recommend you value yourself and do precies everyone who did precies during my lengethibg was living normal life. And was sleeping and doing better mentally and emotionally and way less pain than me and another dude with me we both regret doing LON !

Hope this help.

im done with most of the pain. right now im just bone consolidating. the pain i feel sometimes are the screws against my top shin. it feels uncomfortable. sometimes i would need to stretch it out. also feeling tightness on my skin and ankles. like morning stiffness but mostly on my calf muscles n ankles. its mostly gone after a couple walks though. sometimes i would feel like im cured but the next morning its back again, stiffness. i wonder how i would feel after lengthening my femurs when im not fully cured on my lower leg tibia area. like a nagging stiffness all over my legs. and wonder if should i do my next surgery . aiming for 7 cm and thats a hard accomplishment too because how tight the muscles get.

Beemer, so, you lengthened exactly 55 mm on tibia? How would you describe the transformation? Have your legs become visibly longer, thus making you appear taller and leggy? IMO 55 mm for tibia is a game changer for short legged guys below 170 cm mark.

Also, do you think that pure external will be less painful compared to LON?

my tibia looks longer and sleeker. i think pure external is too much if u are doing it for 7 months with frames. i would do it with a nail and frames because it will be quicker and easier with recovery.
