This experience has really shown how little of a response I'm getting from this place. The doctor hasn't specified how many turns I need to do, but just turn faster. My schedule says to do 2 turns (.5mm) so faster means 3? Can you advise? And no mention of holding off the vitamins... but I will take your advice on that too.

It was quite funny, both doctors almost deliberately avoided talking to me today as I visited the clinic, both had more important things to do. Just hard to get any kind of answer from these guys.

lol I was doing 1 mm everyday up to 5 cm. 0.5 mm is definitely too slow. In your case at least 1 mm if not more or you bones will fuse.

Your antibiotics will kill 'friendly' bacteria as will the alcohol. That is nothing to overly worry about.

If you think you have an infection you could try and get a sample of the infected area and get a lab to culture it for type of bacteria and sensitivity.

Your personal details look like they might be on those x-rays, don't know if you knew that

I don't mind at all, besides they spelled my name wrong, haha.

I took the safe bet as my doctor literally won't give any answers, so I'm doing 5 days of amoxillan. One of the cuts looks really pus filled so I won't take the chance.

Thanks for the heads up. Yes I'm doing 2 turns every 6 hours now religiously, going to stop vitamins for a week and then get back on it. I really appreciate your input man. A solid community really means a lot when your doctor barely talks to you. Did you do Ilizarov tibias as well?

But you have written Canada in the opening post

I'm originally from Canada, but I live in Baku now. I'm pretty sure no one in Canada would do this procedure.

yep, in 2016. Im looking at those xrays and to me they look fused. I  hope your doc knows what he is doing. If I was you I would go for 1.5mm for 2 weeks. Just to be safe. There is no way you could have non union with that much callus.

I wonder if there would be a way to know if you're lengthening and your bones are already fused... catastrophic pain?  :-\

no idea but you should speed up considerably, 1.5 mm seems ok for you.

Ur Dr must guide you through the lengthening spped , as he is the one who can examine ur xray correctly, in Russia they tends to make u lengthen faster in the first days until ur first xray then they will see ur regeneration and advise. But u have to know that lengthening very fast will make ur soft tissues suffer and will increase ur recovery. I was doing 1 mm per day and I regret that i wish i was slower.

After a good week of progress I've hit another road block. Took a full shower as I really havent had one since the surgery. I didnt cover my pin points and rinsed them out thinking it would be fine. 1 day after the pain is really bad, at my pin points all the way into my tibias, really having issues sleeping. Definitely made a mistake there, was reading that I didn't need to over it up, really paying for it now.

I also put a tiny bit of antibiotic cream on each pin point, maybe that could be it? So much info is all over the place with keeping wounds clean. Alcohol, no alcohol, antibiotic cream, soap and water... etc etc.

dont touch those  fki n pins... cover them well and clean them very carefully once a week... blood clots make natural barrier and you are just breaking that seal. Dont use that cream too. Once you have infection take antibiotics for 7 days until it heals. Thats it. DO NOT TAKE SHOWER!!! Only sponge bath and very careful leg cleaning with a moist cloth far away from the pins, not wet, moist! DO NOT TOUCH PINS!

Well, it's already done. I feel like fluid may have gotten into my legs, and the change in pressure is affecting my nerves. I am trying to keep them warm and exercising as much as I can. Anyone have advice to get past this? The pain is really deep, it feels like bone/nerve pain as opposed to soft tissue pain from lengthening. Painkillers are allowing me to walk, but it is definitely harder than before.

At the moment I've decided to tough it out and keep the frames on without a nail. My opinion changes every day, when it's going good I feel like lengthening to 8-9 and nailing, when it's bad like now I feel like tapping out at 5-5.5 and consolidating. Very tough to say.

My goal, at this time is 6-6.5 with only frames, but the pain is slightly getting to me.

Yesterday I was able to take painkillers and walk outside a good 400m , but without painkillers it would be impossible, I skipped lengthening 2 days now, but going to try and do 2 turns today and just rest. My ankles have swollen and filled with fluid, which could be from the showering, so I'll stay in bed today with ankles elevated and do a big walk tomorrow.

Doctor really hasn't said anything since its the weekend. Fending for myself as usual.

I have TSF frames on, I was told not to shower for more than 2 months.

The swelling might also come from certain excercises you've done. Elevating your legs sounds like a good idea.

Did you get any pills prescribed for the nerve pain? Something like Lyrica? I have to take that twice a day on top of the painkillers.

I was prescribed diclophenac injection with dexamethasone. This has been an absolute lifesaver. I was originally prescribed a trauma injection that would knock me out, but it wasn't strong enough. I can't remember the name. I also have ketonal pills when pain is annoying, however it won't help me walk.

Well, I spoke to my doctor friend and he told me it was an idiotic idea. All I have done is put extra fluid into my legs, which has probably built up in my ankles now. Keeping them elevated will circulate it into my bloodstream, but it will take a week or so. Same diagnosis though, lots of vegetables and try to do light exercise to keep blood flowing. Cold/hot compress to cut the swelling.

If you shower, bag your legs. Only way to clean your pin points is gauze and saline solution, no soap. I put soap and water into almost all of my cuts, then covered it with antibiotic cream, which has probably inflamed the pin point more so.

In all I will probably lose 4 days lengthening, maybe more if it still hurts.

so for 6.5cm lengthening without any nail i'd say it could take around give or take 7-8 months until the frames comes off if all goes well.

I started reading your diary a few days ago.

How are you doing right now? Do you have other hospital options nearby, if the need arises?

Sorry to hear your doctor has been, apparently, so nonchalant about it all.

Best of luck.

Things are going okay, it could be going better. Really painful in my pin points specifically on my right knee, I've started another cycle of antibiotics to try and see if it helps. Currently limited to 2 turns a day and walking every second day. I'll go for an x-ray in another week and see if there's any issues.

I’m hoping it isn’t. I’ll have an X-ray next week. I am still able to do 2 turns a day, so I’ll keep doing so until things get worse. I’d do more but the pain is really killing my left leg.

New X rays, a bit disappointed as I've had only a little progress in the past 3 weeks.

Dude I would be worried about preconsolidation especially because you have also not had great communication with your doctor. Is there really no way you get care from another doctor inside or outside your country?

I think I'm going to stick with him, not much new stuff has been said, but he has recommended that I can speed it up to 3 turns a day, and that progress is slow, but going okay with no preconsolidation.

As far as pain, I am doing much better now, I'm not sure what's changed but pin point pain in my right leg has really dropped and I'm getting back to very good form for both. I am going to attempt to try walking without pain killers as soon as possible.

Sanity thanks for the heads up, I don't know too much about the callous formation, so I'll just take your word.

I live in the city that I did my surgery, Baku Azerbaijan. I am very far from any kind of western medical health care...

Well, I am originally from Baku, Azerbaijan. And I have lots of connections there. There is surely some good facilities that can help you. If I might be helpful in any way, please let me know.

Compare it to Rocky's, whose callus formation seemed poor at the time of his x-rays:

Finding it more and more difficult to stay motivated
« Reply #59 on: December 13, 2018, 06:12:41 PM »

Guys, I'm really having trouble staying motivated to even get out of this bed. More and more frequently I'm doing full days where I'm doing limited physiotherapy and zero walking, only just lengthening, vitamins and eating and stuck on my laptop.

How do you do it and stay motivated? Maybe it's because I'm in some weird country for the holidays, but I need to do something to get out of this funk. The weather has turned a bit and it's not fantastic out, I know I need to move and exercise but the motivation isn't there. I'm about 75% done my lengthening, but I just can't see the light at the end of the tunnel.

im not a great motivational speaker but think back at the times where you have suffered heightism... every single one of them.

Dream about how it will all change now when you complete the procedure.
